Should You Blog Every Wedding You Work On?

It's important to blog about your weddings because it helps you to reflect on your work. Blogging your weddings can also give you the chance to connect with other people who are in the same business. Sharing your work also a great way to keep track of what you’re doing and maintain your portfolio.

I also find it very rewarding to be part of a community that shares the same passion. The field of wedding photography is a small one and we all have a story about a wild wedding or emotional day. Being able to share those stories is great. I think it is also a great way for photographers to learn from each other and improve their work as well as their business.

Often times, my blog posts start with just an idea or a concept which turns into a story. Once the pieces come together, I sit down and write about it. It usually takes me about 2 hours to go through everything and write about it in detail and try and find the right words so that everybody can understand what happened on that day. Although most of my blog posts keep to around 1,000 words, they take several hours to complete.

What to include in a wedding day blog post?

Every wedding is different, so there's no right or wrong way of doing it. However, I think you should include a few important details. One major thing to talk about is the wedding venue. When people are searching for specific inspiration for their wedding day, they will most likely want to know the details of the venue. You can serve them by sharing details about the space itself. It’s a great way for them to see what they can expect when they attend a wedding in that particular location.

Other details you should include are the weather on the day, the dress code and whether there was a theme or not. You can also talk about some of the details you worked around in order create a unique look. Share as many decor and detail photos as possible so people can gather inspiration about the big day.

It's always a good idea to talk about the wedding day from an artistic perspective. share your vision for the final photos and how you were able to bring out emotions in each of your images. It’s also a great way for people who are interested about photography as a business, or those looking into going into the profession, to understand how it works. I find this particular post is very important because its gives insight on how other photographers work and their thought process behind each image.

The story should be interesting and engaging enough that people can't wait to read about the next one! You don't want potential clients having to wade through mundane details in order to get any information at all. If you make them wait too long they might not be interested anymore.

I think some people, perhaps those with little experience blogging, can take themselves too seriously and end up writing about things that nobody cares about. Although every single detail is important there's no need to talk about it all in one go - especially if you're the only person who will read it.

I often find posts on my own blog where I've written something really interesting but ended up pausing after a couple of sentences thinking 'who cares?' - this is probably an indication that maybe I should summarize or limit the content from time to time.

It's also a good to include lots of photos in the blog post. A slideshow of images is a great way to keep people reading and also gives you the opportunity show off your photography skills in one quick and easy way.

A photo essay of the entire day is another great option. I've been known to create a blog post where it highlights one specific image from each location or time period throughout the day. It's amazing how powerful a single image can be and how much emotion, detail and character it can hold.

Blogging is great for your SEO as well. When you write a lot about a specific wedding day at a great venue, you have the opportunity to start ranking. This means that when someone searches for wedding venues in the same area, you can appear on top of Google search results.

The best advice I could give is to be yourself and stay true to your personality. Whether it’s high fashion or country casual, talk about what you see at weddings no matter how different or similar they are. Always aim to inspire people with your words and images.

Here are some great ideas for different styles of blog posts about weddings:

1) Tell us a story. A good photo story is always infuenced by the characters, location and emotion present in an image. Although it might be difficult to have an emotional connection with someone you've never met, try your best to find something relatable that comes across in each image.

2) Let's talk details! Fill up my glass, baby! Some people can get very excited about all the little things that make up a wedding day - specific colors, patterns, flowers etc. If you're one of these people then you'll probably enjoy writing about them on your blog. What do I mean when I say 'let's talk details'? Well, when you see a wedding that has lots of small elements to it, or ones that have been put together with love and care, take photos and make notes. You'll be able to share these insights and unique elements on your blog afterwards.

3) A photo essay of the wedding day is another great option for gaining inspiration about what makes an interesting blog post. I’ve been known to create a blog post where it highlights one specific image from each location or time period throughout the day. It's amazing how powerful a single image can be and how much emotion, detail and character it can hold.

4) Talk about what specifically inspires you about this particular wedding day in terms of location/decor/design.

5) Talk about where the wedding took place. In this type of post you'll find yourself also talking more about the actual location as opposed to just showing pretty photographs for no reason.

6) Offer advice and tips about how to do things successfully and avoid pitfalls.

Should you blog every wedding?

This is a question that I've been thinking about recently and the answer for me is yes. I know that what works for one person may not work for another, but here’s my two cents. The more you write, the more opportunities there are to add keywords to rank for into your post. Plus, it makes your couples feel special when they see their photos featured on your blog. Overall, it’s up to you on what’s sustainable for your business when it comes to wedding blogging.
